Sri Lanka packs an unreasonable amount of variety into an island you can cross in a day's drive — rainforest, tea country, ancient cities, desert-dry national parks and two very different coastlines. Narrowing it to the best places to visit in Sri Lanka means leaving plenty out, but these 25 are the ones that keep earning their place on our itineraries, trip after trip.
Sigiriya, the 5th-century rock fortress, is the single most photographed site on the island and deserves the reputation. Dambulla's cave temples sit close enough to combine with it in one day. Polonnaruwa, the medieval capital, is best explored slowly by bicycle among its ruins, while Anuradhapura, older still, holds some of Buddhism's most sacred sites anywhere in the world.
Kandy is the cultural heart of the island and home to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. Ella trades temples for mountain air, tea estates and the Nine Arches Bridge. Nuwara Eliya, nicknamed Little England for its colonial-era bungalows and cool climate, rounds out the tea country trio.
Galle's Dutch-fortified old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site you can walk end to end in an afternoon. Mirissa pairs a curved beach with some of the island's best whale-watching. Unawatuna, Hikkaduwa, Weligama and Tangalle each bring a different flavour of beach town, from lively surf breaks to quiet stretches of sand.
Bentota is the classic resort-and-river-safari base close to Colombo, useful for a first or last night. Colombo itself rewards a proper half-day — Galle Face Green at sunset, the old Dutch Hospital precinct, and a street food crawl are enough to change most people's mind about skipping the capital entirely.
Trincomalee and neighbouring Nilaveli offer calm, clear water for diving and snorkelling in their dry season between April and September. Arugam Bay is Sri Lanka's surf capital, with breaks that draw riders from across the region.
Yala National Park holds the world's highest density of leopards. Udawalawe is the more reliable pick for elephant sightings, with herds visible on almost every drive. Together they cover most of what a first safari in Sri Lanka should include.
A handful of places reward travellers who go a little further: Jaffna in the north for a completely different Tamil-influenced culture and cuisine, Adam's Peak for the pilgrimage climb to its summit shrine, and Ratnapura, the gem-mining heartland behind Sri Lanka's famous sapphires, covered in full in our gem tourism guide.
Beyond the big-name beaches, a few smaller towns reward travellers who slow down — Kalpitiya for kitesurfing and dolphin watching on the northwest coast, and the string of quieter east coast towns around Nilaveli for calm, uncrowded water outside the main tourist season.
Some destinations on this list are easy to underrate on a first visit simply because there wasn't time to do them justice — Anuradhapura in particular is often rushed as a half-day add-on when it genuinely merits a full one. If a first Sri Lanka trip left you wanting more of a specific region, that's usually the right place to anchor a second visit rather than starting the list over from the top.
