These are the best day trips in Sri Lanka from the three places most travellers stay, with honest travel times. Roads here average around 40 km an hour outside the expressways.
Galle Fort. About 2 hours on the Southern Expressway. Walk the ramparts, visit the lighthouse and stay for sunset. Our Galle Fort walking tour brings the Dutch and Portuguese history to life.
Ratnapura gem mines. Around 2.5 hours inland. Watch miners wash gravel in woven baskets at traditional pits, then see stones cut and polished. It is one of the most authentic day trips from Colombo and a window into Sri Lanka's gem tourism. Read our Ratnapura gem guide before you go.
Kandy. Possible in a day, around 3 hours each way, but it is better with an overnight stop.
Sigiriya and Dambulla. About 2.5 to 3 hours north. Climb the rock fortress early, then visit the Dambulla cave temple on the way back.
Nuwara Eliya. Around 2.5 hours through tea country. Stop at a tea factory, then walk around Gregory Lake.
Knuckles Mountain Range. Around 2 hours to the trailheads. A good active day with a local guide.
Mirissa whale watching. About 45 minutes away. The season runs from roughly November to April, with blue whales often seen offshore. See our whale watching guide.
Sinharaja Rainforest. Around 2.5 hours. A UNESCO-listed rainforest full of endemic birds, best with a naturalist guide.
Yala National Park. Possible, but it is a long day of 3.5 hours each way. We suggest one night nearby for a better safari.
Leave early. Traffic builds from 8am around towns.
Take small rupee notes for temple donations, parking and a king coconut from the roadside.
Stop for lunch where the drivers stop. Rice and curry at a local "hotel" is usually the best meal of the day.
Avoid packing too much in. Two main stops is a comfortable day.
If a round trip is more than 6 hours of driving, it usually works better as an overnight stay. You will see more and spend less time looking out of a car window.
