Best Hikes in Sri Lanka: 6 Trails Worth Lacing Up For in 2026

At 2am on Adam's Peak, you will hear the chanting before you see the summit. That is the thing about hiking in Sri Lanka: the trails are rarely just about the view.

The best hikes in Sri Lanka pass tea estates, village temples and cloud forest in a single morning. Here are six we send travellers on most, with honest notes on effort and timing.

1. Adam's Peak (Sri Pada)

Around 5,500 steps lead to a summit sacred to Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and Christians. Most people start from Nallathanniya around 2am to reach the top for sunrise.

The pilgrim season runs from December to May, when tea stalls stay open along the path and the steps are lit. Expect 3 to 4 hours up. Your knees will feel the way down. See our Adam's Peak climb guide.

2. Ella Rock

A half-day hike from Ella town that follows the railway line before climbing through eucalyptus and tea. Allow 3 to 4 hours return.

The route is poorly signed, and locals may offer to "show the way" for a fee. A guide saves time. Details on our Ella Rock hike page.

3. Little Adam's Peak

The easy one. About 45 minutes up gentle steps, with views across Ella Gap. Go at sunrise and pair it with a stop at Nine Arches Bridge on the way back.

4. Horton Plains and World's End

A 9 km loop across high grassland to a cliff edge that drops about 870 metres. Clouds usually roll in by mid-morning, so be at the gate when it opens around 6am.

Bring a warm layer. Mornings up here can feel close to 10°C. Read more about the World's End hike.

5. Knuckles Mountain Range

For serious trekkers, this is the island's wild side. The Knuckles is part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, and trails link remote villages like Meemure with ridges, waterfalls and misty forest.

Routes range from half-day walks to multi-day treks, and a licensed guide is required on most. Our Knuckles trekking page explains the options.

6. Pidurangala Rock

The best view of Sigiriya is from next door. The climb takes 30 to 45 minutes, ending with a short scramble over boulders. Go at sunrise, when the fortress glows orange.

Where Gems Meet the Trail

Many hill country hikes pass close to Sri Lanka's gem country. The rivers around Ratnapura, near the southern Adam's Peak route, have produced sapphires for over 2,000 years.

Adding a morning at a traditional gem pit is an easy detour. Our Ratnapura gem tourism guide explains how visits work.

Practical Tips for Hiking in Sri Lanka

Start early. Heat and afternoon cloud are the two things that spoil most hikes here.

Carry water, a light rain jacket and leech socks for forest trails in the wet months.

Cover shoulders and knees near temples, and remove shoes and hats where asked.

Check the season. The hill country is driest from January to April.
