The route climbs from Kandy through tea estates, tunnels and cloud forest to Ella. It takes around 6.5 to 7 hours. Highlights include Nanu Oya, Pattipola, the highest station on the line, and the final approach to Ella. Read more in our Kandy to Ella train guide.
First class. Air-conditioned, with sealed windows. Comfortable, but not great for photos. Observation saloons, where available, have large rear windows.
Second class reserved. Our favourite for most travellers. Fans, open windows and a guaranteed seat.
Second and third class unreserved. Cheap and lively, but often standing room only on this route.
Reserved seats can be booked through Sri Lanka Railways' official online reservation system, or at station ticket counters. They typically open around 30 days before travel and often sell out within hours in peak season.
Check the official site for current rules, as booking windows and quotas change. Carry your passport, since your ticket may be checked against it.
Be careful with resellers charging several times the fare. Some are genuine, many are not.
Buy an unreserved ticket at the station on the day, and board at Kandy, where the train often has more room.
Travel a shorter stretch. Nanu Oya to Ella is the most scenic section and easier to book.
Ask a tour operator. A driver can meet you at any station, so you can ride the best part and skip the rest.
Sit on the right side heading to Ella for many of the best valley views.
Buy a paper cone of spicy peanuts or vadai from vendors who hop on at stations.
Hanging out of doors is common in photos, but it is risky. Please keep safe.
