The Kandy to Ella train gets called one of the world's most beautiful rail journeys for a reason. Here's how to actually book it, which side to sit on, and what to expect.
Every guest who does the Kandy to Ella train mentions it afterwards, usually before we even ask. It's not a fast way to travel — that's rather the point. Over roughly six to seven hours the line climbs from Kandy's warm mid-country air into cool tea estate hills, past waterfalls, tunnels and terraced slopes that no road route gives you in the same way.
Kandy to Ella covers around 135 kilometres and takes anywhere from six to seven and a half hours depending on the service and how many stops it makes. That sounds long for the distance, and it is — the track was built by British engineers for tea estate logistics, not speed, winding along contour lines rather than cutting straight through the hills. Treat the train itself as the destination for the day, not a means of getting somewhere faster.
Sit on the right-hand side travelling from Kandy to Ella for the best valley and tea estate views, particularly through the stretch around Nanu Oya and Haputale. Reserved seats in the observation carriages sell out weeks ahead in high season, so if a guaranteed seat matters more than spontaneity, book well in advance or travel in one of the classes that can be reserved through the official booking system.
Plenty of travellers skip reserved seating altogether and stand in the open doorways between carriages instead — it's technically discouraged but extremely common, and it's how most of the famous photos of this route get taken. If you go this way, hold on properly and keep your bag close; it's a crowded, moving train, not a photo set.
The train crosses several dramatic viaducts, but none as photographed as the Nine Arches Bridge just outside Ella. Many travellers actually see this bridge twice — once from the train, and again from below or above on foot after arriving in Ella, which is worth doing if you have the extra hour.
A light jacket, even in a tropical country — the hill country air gets genuinely cool once you're above Nanu Oya, and open-door carriages mean a steady breeze most of the way. Snacks and water are sold on board and at stations, but a stash of your own removes any worry about a long, slow stretch with nothing to eat.
Kandy to Ella gets most of the attention, but the same line continues further to Badulla, and some travellers prefer starting further back at Nanu Oya, near Nuwara Eliya, to shorten the ride while still catching the most scenic stretch through the highest sections of tea country.
Sri Lanka Railways runs several classes on this route, from unreserved third class through to reserved second class and the more comfortable observation carriages fitted with larger windows. Unreserved classes are cheap and flexible but mean standing if the train is full; reserved seats cost more and need booking ahead, but guarantee a spot for the full journey.
Because the train earns so much attention on its own, it's tempting to treat both endpoints as afterthoughts. Don't — Kandy's Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and Ella's hiking trails each deserve a proper day, not just a station stop either side of the ride.
