Mannar is one of Sri Lanka's least visited corners: baobab trees, flamingos, an old fort and the legend of Adam's Bridge.
Donkeys wander the streets, an ancient African baobab stands by the road, and flamingos wade in the lagoon. Mannar does not feel like anywhere else in Sri Lanka.
This Mannar travel guide is for travellers who want a quieter, lesser-known corner of the island.
Mannar Island sits off the north-west coast, joined to the mainland by a causeway. It is roughly 2 hours from Anuradhapura and a similar distance from Jaffna.
Adam's Bridge. A chain of sandbanks stretches from Talaimannar towards India. In the Ramayana, it is the bridge built by Rama's army. Much of it is protected, but you can see the start from the coast.
The baobab tree. One of the largest in Sri Lanka, believed to have been planted by Arab traders centuries ago. Its trunk is enormous.
Mannar Fort. Built by the Portuguese and taken by the Dutch, it stands at the island's entrance.
Vankalai Sanctuary. From roughly November to March, migrating birds, including flamingos, gather in the wetlands.
Madhu Church. On the mainland, the Shrine of Our Lady of Madhu draws large pilgrimages, especially in August.
The Gulf of Mannar was once famous for its pearl banks, traded alongside Sri Lanka's sapphires and rubies for centuries. It is part of the same story of island treasures that still draws travellers to Ratnapura, the centre of Sri Lanka's gem tourism. Read our Ratnapura gem guide.
Mannar is a fishing town. Try crab and cuttlefish curry with rice, and palmyra-based sweets from local shops.
The dry months, usually from about February to September, are the most comfortable. Birdwatchers should aim for the cooler months when migrants arrive.
Facilities are basic. Carry cash and expect simple guesthouses.
Dress modestly. Mannar is a mix of Tamil Hindu, Catholic and Muslim communities.
Combine it with Jaffna or Anuradhapura rather than making a separate trip.
