The Sri Lankan leopard is the island's top predator, with no lions or tigers to compete with. That makes it bolder and more visible in daylight than leopards in many other countries. Parts of Yala hold some of the highest leopard densities recorded anywhere.
In a shared jeep, you follow the group's pace. On a private safari, the jeep is yours. You can wait at a waterhole for an hour, skip the crowds at a sighting, or focus on birds and elephants too.
For photographers and families with children, a private jeep is almost always worth it.
Yala is the most famous park for leopards, with coastal scrub, rock outcrops and lagoons. Block 1 is the busiest and best known. Mornings from around 6am are usually most productive.

Wilpattu is Sri Lanka's largest national park and far quieter than Yala. Its natural lakes, called villus, attract leopards, sloth bears and deer. Sightings take more patience, but you may have them to yourself. Read about our Wilpattu safari.
February to July is often best for Yala, when water is scarce and animals gather near waterholes. Wilpattu is good for much of the year, with the driest months usually offering the best viewing.
Wear neutral colours and keep voices low.
Bring a zoom lens or binoculars. Leopards often rest in trees or on rocks.
Book two game drives if you can. It greatly improves your chances.
Respect the rules. Staying on tracks and keeping distance protects the animals.
