A Sinharaja Rainforest trek is one of the most rewarding nature experiences in Sri Lanka, and one of the least crowded.
Sinharaja is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the country's largest remaining area of lowland rainforest. Many of its trees, frogs, lizards and birds are found only in Sri Lanka. Look for the Sri Lanka blue magpie, the red-faced malkoha and the green pit viper resting quietly on a branch.
Kudawa, on the western side, is the most visited entrance. It sits in Ratnapura district, a few hours from Colombo.
Deniyaya and Pitadeniya, on the southern side, are closer to the south coast and quieter.
A guide is required inside the reserve. Local guides often grew up in the surrounding villages and can spot birds and reptiles you would walk straight past. Treks usually run 3 to 6 hours, with options to reach waterfalls or viewpoints.
It is a rainforest, so expect both. Wear leech socks or tuck trousers into your socks. A little salt or soap helps. The leeches are harmless, just annoying.
January to April and August to September are usually the driest periods. Early mornings are best for birds.
Families around Sinharaja grow tea on small plots and tap kithul palms for treacle. Many homestays serve rice and curry with jungle greens picked the same morning. Ask to see how kithul treacle is made. It pairs perfectly with buffalo curd.

A day trip from Galle or the south coast is possible, but staying a night near the forest gives you the early morning, when birds are most active. It is also a good break between the hill country and the beach.
