This Sri Lanka 10-day itinerary follows the classic loop: ancient cities, the hill country train, a leopard safari and a few slow days by the sea. Driving times are realistic, and each day has one main focus.
Stay in Negombo, close to the airport. Rest, then watch the fishing boats come in at sunset.
Drive about 4 hours north. Climb Sigiriya early, visit the Dambulla cave temple and take a jeep safari to see elephants at Minneriya or Kaudulla, depending on the season.
On the way, stop at a spice garden in Matale. In Kandy, visit the Temple of the Tooth and the Peradeniya botanical gardens. Watch a Kandyan dance performance in the evening.
Drive into the tea hills. Visit a tea factory and try a fresh cup where it was grown.

Drive about 3 hours to Yala for an afternoon game drive. Leopards, elephants, crocodiles and peacocks are all common sights.
Head west to Mirissa or Galle. Swim, eat fresh seafood and walk the ramparts of Galle Fort at sunset.
Drive about 2 hours to Colombo on the expressway, or 2.5 hours direct to the airport.
