Sri Lanka Hiking Tour: A 10-Day Trekking Itinerary for Active Travellers

Most people see Sri Lanka's hills from a train window. On foot, you meet the tea pickers, hear the temple bells and earn every view.

This 10-day Sri Lanka hiking tour is built for active travellers who want trails every day, with enough rest to enjoy them.

Day 1: Arrive and Head North

Transfer to the Sigiriya area. An easy afternoon walk through village paddy fields helps shake off the flight.

Day 2: Pidurangala and Sigiriya

Climb Pidurangala at sunrise, then Sigiriya later in the morning. Afternoon at leisure.

Days 3 and 4: Knuckles Mountain Range

Transfer to the Knuckles. Trek with a licensed guide to Meemure village and spend a night with a local family. Day 4 crosses ridges and forest back to the road. See our Knuckles trekking guide.

Day 5: Kandy Rest Day

A gentle day by the lake, with the evening ceremony at the Temple of the Tooth. Book a massage. Your legs will thank you.

Day 6: Horton Plains

Drive into the hill country and stay near Nuwara Eliya. Early the next morning, walk the 9 km World's End loop before the clouds arrive.

Day 7: Train to Ella

Take the hill country train, then walk up Little Adam's Peak for sunset.

Day 8: Ella Rock

A half-day trek along the railway and up through the tea. Afternoon visit to Nine Arches Bridge.

Day 9: Adam's Peak

Transfer to Nallathanniya. Start the climb around 2am to reach the summit for sunrise. The pilgrim season runs from December to May.

Day 10: Ratnapura and Colombo

On the drive back, stop in Ratnapura, the centre of Sri Lanka's gem tourism. Watch miners wash gravel for sapphires, then continue to Colombo or the airport.

How Fit Do You Need to Be?

You should be comfortable walking 4 to 6 hours on uneven ground. Adam's Peak is the hardest day because of the steps, not the distance. Every hike can be shortened.

When to Go

January to April is usually the driest and clearest period in the hill country. It also overlaps with the Adam's Peak pilgrim season.

What to Pack

Broken-in hiking shoes, a warm layer for early starts, a rain jacket, leech socks and a head torch.
