Nine Arches Bridge is Ella's most photographed landmark, a colonial-era railway viaduct built entirely from stone, brick and cement, without a single piece of steel, curving gracefully through tea plantations and jungle. Trains still cross it several times a day, drawing crowds who time their visit around the timetable for the classic shot of a train threading through the arches. Ella Rock and Little Adam's Peak offer two very different hikes from the same town. Little Adam's Peak is a short, well-marked climb suited to most fitness levels, with sweeping tea country views at the top, while Ella Rock is longer, steeper and involves some route-finding through active rail lines and tea estates. Both are listed among the region's best hikes by the Sri Lanka Travel. Most travellers do Little Adam's Peak for sunset and save Ella Rock for a full morning.
The train journey between Kandy and Ella is regularly ranked among the world's most scenic rail routes, winding through tea plantations, tunnels and misty mountain passes over roughly seven hours. Ella itself sits near the route's dramatic final stretch, past Nine Arches Bridge and down toward the lowlands, per the Sri Lanka Holidays. Booking second-class with the window open is widely considered the better way to experience it.
Combine Ella with nearby Ravana Falls, Little Adam's Peak and the Kandy-Ella train line for a full hill country loop.
