Mihintale is where, according to tradition, the monk Mahinda introduced Buddhism to Sri Lanka's King Devanampiyatissa in 247 BC. A long flight of ancient stone steps climbs a rocky hill dotted with stupas, caves and meditation platforms, with views over the surrounding plains.
