Climb Pidurangala Rock, Sigiriya's neighbour, for one of the best views in Sri Lanka — a sweeping panorama of Sigiriya Rock rising out of the jungle. Bicycles in Polonnaruwa are available in children's sizes, and a tuk-tuk can be arranged for younger kids. The site is large and exposed, so bring hats, sunscreen and plenty of water. Head out on a jeep safari in Minneriya National Park, famous for the herds of wild elephants that gather around its ancient reservoir. Then travel through rolling countryside to Matale, where a guided walk through a spice garden introduces the family to cinnamon, cardamom, pepper, vanilla and cocoa — kids can touch, smell and taste as they go. Continue to Kandy, Sri Lanka's hill capital, for a stroll around the scenic Kandy Lake, then enjoy a lively Kandyan cultural show with colourful costumes, drumming and fire-walking.

Safari jeeps are open-sided, so bring hats, sunscreen and binoculars. Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed, and the safari may take place in nearby Kaudulla or Hurulu Eco Park depending on where the elephants are gathering. It's a full day on the road, so pack snacks for the kids.
Begin the day with a visit to the sacred Temple of the Tooth Relic in Kandy, home to Sri Lanka's most important Buddhist relic. Then drive up into the misty hill country, passing the Ramboda Falls and emerald tea plantations. Visit a working tea factory to see how Ceylon tea is made, enjoy a tea tasting and let the kids try plucking tea leaves. Continue to Nuwara Eliya, known as "Little England", for a short stop at Gregory Lake. Later, board the famous scenic train to Ella — one of the most beautiful rail journeys in the world, winding past waterfalls, tea estates and mountain villages.

Children prone to motion sickness may appreciate medication for the winding mountain roads.
Spend a full day exploring Ella at a relaxed pace. Take the easy hike to Little Adam's Peak, suitable for children, for spectacular views over the valley. Visit the famous Nine Arch Bridge and, with a little luck, watch a blue train cross the stone arches. Later, enjoy free time in Ella's laid-back town, or try the Flying Ravana zipline for older kids and adventurous parents.

The Little Adam's Peak hike is suitable for most children aged 5 and over. Wear good walking shoes. The Flying Ravana zipline is optional, has minimum age and weight limits, and is paid locally.
Leave the hills behind and descend towards the south coast, stopping at the Ravana Falls along the way. Arrive near Yala National Park, Sri Lanka's most famous wildlife reserve, and head out on a jeep safari. Yala has one of the highest densities of leopards in the world, and the whole family can also look out for elephants, crocodiles, sloth bears, peacocks and deer.

Drive west along the south coast to Rekawa, one of Sri Lanka's most important nesting beaches for sea turtles. Visit the turtle conservation project to learn how local volunteers protect nests and hatchlings — a memorable experience for young nature lovers. Continue to the beach town of Mirissa and spend the rest of the day playing in the sand and swimming in the warm Indian Ocean.

Turtle sightings are never guaranteed. An optional turtle watch at Rekawa can be arranged on request. Some beaches on the south coast can have strong currents, so please swim only where it is safe and supervise children closely.
Enjoy a slow, relaxing day in Mirissa with no long drives. Spend time on the beach — build sandcastles, swim in the calm bays or simply rest under the palms. Then climb the short path to Coconut Tree Hill for a classic family photo overlooking the ocean.

Some beaches on the south coast can have strong currents, so swim only in calm, safe areas and supervise children closely. The path up Coconut Tree Hill is short but can be slippery after rain. Optional extras such as whale watching or snorkelling can be arranged on request at extra cost.
After breakfast, drive to the historic city of Galle and walk the ramparts of Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, past the lighthouse, colonial streets, cafés and craft shops. Continue to Balapitiya for a boat safari on the Madu River, gliding through mangrove tunnels, visiting a cinnamon island and spotting monitor lizards and birds. Afterwards, transfer to Bandaranaike International Airport for your departure flight, taking home wonderful family memories of Sri Lanka.
